reading report / august

(english version is available below)

a human being, who had no work to deal with in august, had enough time to read eight books in a month. i have never had such an amplitudinous reading report. august was a magical period in terms of productivity in all spheres of life, and i am happy thanks to even just thinking about it. i hope that the amount of text below won`t freak you out, because i have read some truly worthy books in august, and telling you about them is an extraordinary pleasure <3

  • "признай свои недостатки и помни о них, но не позволяй им командовать собой. пусть они научат тебя терпению, радости, проницательности";
  • "ни один реальный человек не сделает нас цельными. это задача для нас самих. конечно, по ходу дела нам будут помогать другие люди – друзья, любовники, супруги, психотерапевты, учителя и наставники, – но задача удовлетворения собственных потребностей лежит на нас самих";
  • "индивидуальность возможна лишь в том случае, если она проистекает из целостности";
  • "ваша главная обязанность – заботиться о себе и собственной жизни, и вам самим решать, как с этим справляться. в этом помогает постоянное осознание того, что вам нужно, что вам следует делать, что вы можете предложить в каждый конкретный момент";

"talking as fast as i can: from gilmore girls to gilmore girls, and everything in between" лорэн грэм.

  • "радость потока — это высшая награда, которой может одарить нас природа за стремление к решению все более и более сложных осмысленных задач, и которую другим способом получить невозможно";
  • "счастье — это не то, что просто случается с нами (happiness is not something that just happens), это и искусство, и наука, это то, что требует и усилий, и своеобразной квалификации";
  • "люди, научившиеся контролировать свои переживания, смогут сами влиять на качество своей жизни. только так каждый из нас может приблизиться к тому, чтобы быть счастливым";
  • "обретение контроля над собственной жизнью — нелегкое дело, иногда сопряженное с болью. однако в конечном счете оптимальные переживания складываются в ощущение овладения собственной жизнью, вернее даже, в ощущение причастности к определению содержания своей жизни. это переживание наиболее близко к тому, что мы обычно называем «счастьем»";

one. "bad feminist" by roxane gay.

while i was getting ready to write articles about inspiration books written by women for paris with me (the first one and the second one), i spent some time staring at my bookshelves. as a result, i realized that i would loved to re-read essays by roxane gay. i believe that all girls and women, as well as boys and men should read "bad feminist". first of all, it is an opportunity to discover a totally different way of growing up and living, and to realize how diverse the experiences of other people are (and very often worse than ours, even though we tend to forget about it). and secondly, in order to get a chance to have your eyes opened and to find out what women have to deal with and then consequently understand them a tiny bit better.

in the "bad feminist", roxane writes about her personal and professional lives, as well as analyzes the popular culture (for example, she talks about the movie "help", which i found more than worthy, whereas she resented it). she shares the stories from her childhood and youth, mentions the tragedy that affected her entire life; talks about the process of growing up, looking for her own path and actually building it piece by piece, about her views on life and the process of trying to find a way to accept herself and forgive herself for the time of her being. she opens up and she lets herself be truly vulnerable in the texts, which is the biggest gift you could get from an author. i am convinced that this is a very important book!

two. "how to win friends and influence people" by dale carnegie.

a friend of mine borrowed me this book, and i wanted to finish it before leaving, so i had to read fast. however, i think this is one of those books that i you have dedicate time to and think, write some aspects down and think again in order to then implement them into your life successfully. therefore, i may get back to it some time later in life. meanwhile, i am here to tell you that in this legendary book dale carnegie shares numerous pieces of advice on how to act in everyday life situations at home, at work and on other kinds of social occasions. some of them are pretty basic, but still necessary, because we often ignore them. i appreciated the work part the most, because i have realized within the past year that i definitely need to work on my communication skills at work. i encourage you to not let the name put you out of countenance and to read it without any prejudice.

three. "the parisians" by léon-paul fargue.

i adore going to a bookstore and finding a book that i know nothing about. i have neither heard anything about a french writer léon-paul fargue, nor about his texts. however, i did not hesitate and i bought this book right away on my first day in lvov. "the parisians" is a book about the life of very different people in paris. i enjoyed some of the stories a lot, while others bothered me a bit, because they seemed to be too specific and about people that did not seem to interest me that much. all in all, i had some rest and even some fun, while reading this book. i am a fan of anything french, so i was happy to read this book. unfortunately, this book does not exist in english in the same form. however, i highly recommend finding any short stories by this writer and reading them.  monsier fargue is definitely on my to read-list for the future, when i will go back to reading in french again, next to andré maurois, whom you will discover very soon.

four. "anxious to please: 7 revolutionary practices for the chronically nice" by james rapson and craig english.

this book was recommended to me by a friend, vlada (<3), and i am extremely grateful for it! this book is filled with worthy thoughts and useful ideas. i am convinced that literally anyone would find an important and appropriate part, as well as benefit from reading it. if, of course, the desire and willingness to make an effort and to work on yourself hard will be present. i have read this book very fast, and i know for sure that i will re-read it again and again.

the authors of "anxious to please" analyze such problems, as "the desire to be definitely liked by others even if to the detriment of oneself, chronic anxiety and self-doubt, low self-esteem, anxiety about what others think about you". all of the aforementioned issues definitely bother me in this or that manner, and i know that they bother many others too. the book is about the source of these problems, it gives a deep analysis of what leads to such difficulties and then provides you with numerous pieces of advice on how to tackle these predicaments. and yes, you will have to ask yourself a lot of uncomfortable questions and find some uncomfortable and maybe painful answers. however you learn to listen to yourself and to hear yourself, understand yourself and others, start feeling much more comfortable and acting according to your real wishes and goals, as a result. this book is a jewel! and, of course, i am sharing a few quotes from it with you:
  • "acknowledge you limitations and remember about them, but do not let them take over you. let them teach you patience, joy and clear-sightedness";
  • "no other human being can make you whole. this is a task for yourself. naturally, other people will help - friends, lovers, partners, psychotherapists, teachers and mentors, - but only we are responsible for achieving the goal of satisfying our personal needs";
  • "individuality is only possible when it comes from integrity";
  • "your main responsibility is to take care of yourself and your life, and it is your choice how you do it. a constant awareness of what you need, what you should do, and what you can do is essential";
  • "if you fight with yourself, with your own thoughts and feelings, it is going to be much harder for you to understand them and to deal with them. however, if you treat yourself with respect, it will be much easier to see the inner processes and to fix something".

five. "violets on wednesdays" by andré maurois.

i paid for a monthly subscription on bookmate in order to read the previous book, but i simultaneously solved the issue of my august reading, because i got access to such an impressive selection of books. after reading "anxious to please" i felt the need to read something light-hearted, and in order to find what i was looking for, i consulted my to-read list on goodreads. i found "violets on wednesdays" there, and i am so happy that i did. this book is a compilation of short stories by a french author andré maurois. just like in the case of fargue, this particular book does not exist in english, but you can find numerous texts by maurois, and i encourage you to do so. he shares marvelous stories about a charming life of french people. i love it, really! i think this is a perfect choice for days when you are in the mood to read, but want something soulful. i cannot wait to read more texts written by maurois and i hope to re-read them in french one day <3

six. "astring lidgren. this day is the life itself" by jens andersen.

this is one of the books that i have initially looked at when i had started using bookmate last year. unfortunately i have not found it in english anywhere, just like the french books i mention in this post of mine, but i will tell you about it anyway. i am so happy that i got to read this book, and the experience was even more special, because i started it before coming to sweden and finished it after arriving here. astring lindgren is the first author, who has impressed me so much that i wanted to read everything that she had ever written. i was eight years old, when i got a set of her books  as gift for my birthday. i remember that day very vividly, even though it took place fifteen years ago. it is definitely one of the best gifts i have ever received, and i love those books to this day with all of my heart. astrid lindgren is the first person, thanks to whom i realized that writing can become a job. astrid lindgren is the first female writer that i have discovered, thanks to whom i realized that women write and publish their texts as well, meaning that i could too. i was a kid, but those thoughts were in my head even back then. it is incredible to think about it so many years later!

this book surprised me in many ways. i found out the story of astrid`s first child, her first years of an adult life with a lot of challenges and struggles, her move to stockholm and difficulties there. i read about her only husband, her second child and her numerous jobs. i discovered her path of development and growth all the way from a young girl to a mature woman. i love biographies, memories, diaries and letters. and this book has a little bit of all of the aforementioned. astrid has definitely impacted my life, and it is one of the reasons why it was such a pleasure to read about her life-long process of affecting others. i have admired her as a child, and i admire her as an adult. thanks to this book, i know much more about the most important writer of my childhood, which is priceless!

seven. "talking as fast as i can: from gilmore girls to gilmore girls, and everything in between"  by lauren graham.

a bit more of nostalgia. once i came home after school and turned on the tv. that is how i discovered one of the first episodes of "gilmore girls". i finally watched the entire series many years later online, whereas nikita and i re-watched all seasons together this years in order for him to be ready to watch the new long-awaited season with me and be aware of who is who.

lauren graham is an actress, who played one of the main characters in the series, wrote this book about her childhood, youth, the process of becoming and actress and doing all sorts of jobs for years, before she stared being paid for her acting decently. obviously the most precious part in this book is when lauren shares her memories of a period when the decision to shoot the new season has finally been made. it was even more special and confusing, because nine years prior to that the series ended abruptly without anyone being properly warned about it. so, lauren describes her feelings about going back to a work place, that had such a huge impact on her life and her career, as well as meeting people she used to work so much and be close with. i understand, that it only makes sense to read this book, if you, like me, have an emotional connection to "gilmore girls", but i do believe that many of you would enjoy watching the series (everyone, actually?).

eight. "flow: the psychology of optimal experience" by mihaly csikszentmihalyi.

initially i was convinced that this book is a must for anyone who does anything creative. i have read numerous articles about the concept of flow and its role in any kind of creative process or entrepreneurial work. however, while reading this book, i realized that it is a must-read for every single person no matter what he or she does.

the most important idea of the book is that it is possible to achieve flow while dealing with almost any task, and if you manage to learn to do that, your life will get much more enjoyable, whereas you will get much happier. maybe it sounds very ephemeral and unclear, but the author of the books is a "psychology professor, a former chicago university dean well-known for his research in such topics as happiness, creativity and subjective well-being". he does not only have quite a few worthy thoughts, but also numerous years of experience, theoretical knowledge and practical proof to accompany them.

naturally, it would be impossible for me not to share a few quotes from this incredible book. i hope that they will make you realize that you definitely need to read this book:
  • "the joy of the flow is the most important prize that you could get from nature for your pursuit of dealing with more and more complicated tasks, and it is the one that you could not get in any other way";
  • "happiness is not something that just happens; it is art and science, it requires effort and a certain qualification";
  • "people who have learnt to control their emotions, will be capable of controlling their lives. this is the only way for us to get close to true happiness";
  • "getting control over your own life is a complicated task, which is sometimes connected to pain. however, in the end the optimal experiences turn into a feeling of being in control of your own life, into a feeling that you are responsible for what your life consists of. this experience it as close as it could get to what we consider "happiness"";
  • "only the direct control of our experience and an ability to feel joy while doing whatever we get to do, can overcome obstacles that prevent us from becoming content".
yay! that is it! i sincerely hope that i have managed to interest you in the books that i had read in august.  and as always, if your hands have held a really good book within the past four weeks - please tell me about it!
