do and don`t

a couple of days ago i was contacted by valya, a founder of milestone, a blog about productivity. she asked me to share my life dos and don`ts, and naturally i agreed. i must say that it was much easier to come up with dos than with don`ts, which is why there are seven of the former and just three of the latter. after writing the list, i realized that i was satisfied with the result, so i translated it in order to share it here with you. the initial publication is available here.

do

i wake up at the same every day. yes, for someone waking up at six am on a saturday is insane, but the truth is that when it becomes a habit, you simply forget what painful waking up is like. moreover, monday mornings are no longer a torture. the best way to start a day? to wake up five minutes before your alarm goes off, feeling well. and yes, of course, it also means that i tend to go to sleep pretty early at about the same time as well in order to have a high-quality quantity hours of rest.

i make time for myself in the morning no matter when i have to leave home. sometimes i have a couple of hours for reading and writing, and sometimes i only have ten minutes to sit in a quiet room on my own and drink a huge mug of earl grey tea. if i miss this "ritual" of mine, i may end up having a bad mood throughout the whole day.

i always have breakfast. i do not understand people who "do not have enough time" or "forget" to have breakfast. i know that without breakfast i will neither have energy to move, nor will i be able to think properly, and my only desire will be - to eat. therefore, yes, sometimes i wake up really early in order to make breakfast and eat, because i realize that i won`t be capable of functioning properly otherwise.

i try to read every day and i always take a book with me. i read not only at home, but also on my way somewhere (on the subway, for example) and while being in lines. i am convinced that what matters is not how much free time you have, but what your priorities are. i know that if i do not read, then i will get irritated, nervous and mad much easier and much quicklier. everything will get worse right away, and i will probaby feel like nothing is the way i want it to be. if i have issues with my mood - ten or twenty minutes with a book will be enough to make me feel much better.

reading is not just an interesting, exciting and useful way to spend your time, it is also a great tool to shift your mind from one topic to another, as well as give it some rest, which is so important these days. i believe that people who read books, think differently, see the world differently and cooperate with it differently.

i read books in original, if they were written in english. it used to be more difficult, took more time and cost me more money, but those issues are gone thanks to book depository. the prices are good and the delivery is pretty quick and free. i love you, book depository! you make my life better, so much better!

i mix the genres and the languages up. if i have just finished reading a novel in english, i will most probably choose a book abotu self-growth in russian next. i think it is a great exercise for your brain, as well as a fun approach to reading.

i remember about the importance and the effect of the enjoyable details. i love scented candles and tea, i love socks with fun patterns on them, magazines and stylish stationery. i used to think that those things were just a silly way to spend money, but then i realized that those are the tools that make my life better and that make me happier.

don`t

i do no feel embarassed because of what i like. as a teenager i used to dress the way "it was cool" and went to places that "were trendy", but at some point i got fed up with all of that, got a little bit more courageous and started a life-long path of self-discovery. now i am perfectly comfortable talking about me preferring men`s brogues and converse shoes to high-heeled ones, reading books instead of going to clubs, as well as getting exhausted after being with big companies of people, because i am an introvert. becoming older and getting to know yourself is awesome!

i do not agree out of politeness, if i really do not want to say "yes". and yes, it is something i am still learning and still practising. i used to agree all the time, ignoring my own desires. i said "yes" to the piece of cake i did not want to eat, to the cafe that i was not in the mood to go to and to the movie that i was not interested in watching. i was convinced that by saying "no", i would be rude and i would hurt the other person`s feelings. however, i realized that this is not a way to live, so these days i stop for a second and i ask myself - do i want this or do i not? re-learning these things is hard, but worthy!

i do not ignore an opportunity, if i do not know something or if i do not have a particular skill. i started working early, so i had to learn everything along the way. yes, i was filled with anxiety and fear, but my enthusiasm and my desire to do real things were stronger. as a result, i moved on from one position to another, from one set of responsibilities to another, and every time i was worried that i was not good enough, that i would not suit the role, that i would not manage the tasks. what was next? i kept on discovering that i could do much more than i could imagine, this is why i always remind others to not let fear prevent them from doing things.

do

don`t
